House Republican leaders have decided to accept a short-term extension of the payroll tax cut. The plan involves passing a short-term extension in exchange for a promise from Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid that he will appoint members of a conference committee to negotiate a long-term extension.
House Republican leaders will present this to their membership at a conference call later this evening.
The bill could be passed, potentially, by unanimous consent, which would not require the full House to return to a vote.
